Thoughts on the Internet
Updated: Mar 1, 2020

We all use IT every day, anyone under 25 years of age can’t even remember a world without the internet. But how big is it, and how fast is it growing? Imagine it’s your birthday, and you get one of those cards that plays a tune. A week later you throw it in the bin. You will have thrown away more IT capability than existed in the entire world in the 1960’s! So let’s have a look at some facts & figures: 20% of the worlds data is searchable, and accessible to everyone. Google alone processes more than 40,000 searches every second (3.5 billion searches per day)! 90% of the worlds data has been created in the last two years. Data size is measured in bytes, then in order of size: kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, petabytes, exabytes, zettabytes, and finally yottabytes - Nothing exists beyond this. … We are currently over 8 zettabytes globally, and growing by 2.5 exabytes per day. Social Media:
Snapchat users share 527,760 photos
More than 120 professionals join LinkedIn
Users watch 4,146,600 YouTube videos
456,000 tweets are sent on Twitter
Instagram users post 46,740 photos
… All every minute
1.5 billion people are active on Facebook daily
Europe has more than 307 million people on Facebook
There are five new Facebook profiles created every second!
More than 300 million photos get uploaded per day
Every minute there are 510,000 comments posted and 293,000 statuses updated
Communications every minute:
We send 16 million text messages
There are 990,000 Tinder swipes
156 million emails are sent; Worldwide it is expected that there will be 9 billion email users by 2019
15,000 GIFs are sent via Facebook messenger
Every minute there are 103,447,520 spam emails sent
There are 154,200 calls on Skype
Photos:
People took 1.2 trillion photos by the end of 2017
There are 4.7 trillion photos stored
That’s a lot of data!
